What is the difference between UMF and MGO ratings?

MGO (methylglyoxal) is the specific chemical compound responsible for non-peroxide antibacterial activity, measured directly in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is a trademarked grading standard administered by the UMF Honey Association in New Zealand. UMF verifies three key markers: methylglyoxal (potency), leptosperin (authenticity to the Leptospermum scoparium plant), and hydroxymethylfurfural (freshness and absence of heat damage). A UMF 15+ rating corresponds to an MGO level of at least 514 mg/kg.

10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) is a unique fatty acid found exclusively in royal jelly secreted from the mandibular and hypopharyngeal glands of nurse worker bees.
